LTP Property Maintenance offers 3 types of sod for your yard. Let’s see which best suits you!

1. Tall Fescue, which is our most popular variety. This grass type is for homeowners looking for a year round green yard, or who have a partially shaded yard where other grasses would struggle to thrive. It is typically kept at a taller height of cut and has a dark green color.

2. Bermudagrass is great for low maintenance. This grass type is growing in its popularity here in North Carolina because of its drought resistance and ease of maintenance. Bermudagrass is typically kept at a lower height of cut, and does not require as frequent mowing or watering compared to Tall Fescue because of its horizontal growing habits and root composition. This grass type loves lots of sun and hot summer days. The biggest trade off with Bermudagrass is it does go dormant in the winter and turn a brownish yellow color until warmer temperatures return.

3. Zoysia, a premium quality grass. Zoysia is in some ways a blend between Tall Fescue and Bermudagrass. It has a light green color and is typically kept at a lower height of cut, but not as low as Bermudagrass. It too has great drought tolerance and a horizontal growing habit to reduce mowing frequency. It can tolerate full sun, or partly shaded areas. Zoysia grass creates a very thick, full lawn and is incredibly soft! The one trade off is the same as Bermudagrass, as it does go dormant in winter as well. However, it does tend to have a slightly shorter dormancy period compared to other warm season grasses.

One of the most frequently asked questions when doing a lawn renovation is, “Should we do seed of sod?”. Either way we can help with your lawn renovation, but let me tell you why you’ll love sod. Our customers value their time and peace of mind greatly, and sod fits perfectly in line with this mindset. Once we install it, follow our Sod Care Guide that we provide to you and you immediately have a beautiful lawn. There is no guesswork, patchy growth like commonly experienced when trying to grow grass from seed, erosion issues, birds or animals eating seed, waiting for a very confined timeframe to complete the project, mud being tracked in the house by kids or pets while waiting weeks for your seed to germinate, excessive watering, and the list goes on. Sod can be put down at most any time of year and saves a lot of stress from your life. That is why, despite its price tag being higher than seed, it is by far the most popular lawn establishing option for our customers. Huntersville landscaping landscaping Huntersville NC

If you are looking to tackle your new sod maintenance on your own, here are some tips to make you successful. After your sod has rooted and is ready to be mowed, we recommend cutting no more than ⅓ of the total grass blade height off in one mowing session. Cutting greater than ⅓ the height can stress the lawn and cause yellowing or damage. Tall Fescue likes to be kept between 3”-4” depending on the season (tall height of cut is preferable for summer). Bermudagrass can be kept as low as putting green height, but most homeowners will opt for between 1½”-2½”. Zoysia likes to be kept in between Tall Fescue and Bermudagrass at about 2”-3”.

Weed controls and fertilizers are critical as well. The most important times for weed controls are before weeds begin to germinate in late winter/early spring and again in early summer when common summer weeds like crabgrass, dallis grass, and nutsedge begin to popup. Fertilization of Tall Fescue is best done during the cooler times of Spring and Fall. Bermudagrass and Zoysia respond best to fertilization during the mid-late spring and summer, when they are actively growing most vigorously.

Watering is an important step often skipped. Even well established lawns require watering during periods of low rainfall or extreme temperatures. For Tall Fescue, we usually recommend at least 2-3 times per week, where Zoysia and Bermudagrass can hold their own on 1-2 times per week. A well irrigated lawn helps keep grass strong and resist sunscald, disease, and pests. lawn care Concord NC lawn care Concord
