In North Carolina we have 3 major grass types that people use for their lawn. 

First is Tall Fescue. Tall Fescue is dark green, with a thick blade and tall height of cut, typically around 3”-4”. It is a great grass if you like stripes mowed in the yard and prefer year round interest. In North Carolina, Tall Fescue does best in partly shady areas. Tall Fescue is a higher maintenance grass during the Summer, as it does require more watering and treatments to keep it healthy under heat stress.

Second is Bermudagrass. Bermudagrass is a little lighter in color than Tall Fescue, with a very thin vining blade. This grass is usually maintained low, from 2.5” all the way down to .25”-.5” if being used as a putting green. Bermudagrass is very drought tolerant and loves full sun. During the cooler times of the year from late fall to very early spring Bermudagrass does go dormant and becomes yellow/brown in color.

Lastly is Zoysia. Zoysia is almost like a combination of Tall Fescue and Bermudagrass. It has a lighter green color, medium blade thickness, and can be kept at a low or high height of cut. It thrives in full sun and can tolerate part shade as well. Zoysia is very drought resistant, and does have the same tendency as Bermudagrass to go into dormancy during winter.  lawn mowing Huntersville NC

Our most common drainage services are burying downspouts, installing catch basins, and french drains. A lot of homeowners do not fully understand the differences between these types of drainage systems, so we like to provide a brief overview. Burying downspouts is a great, low impact way to remove surface water from sensitive areas of your property.

Your roof collects a lot of water! And if you have a relatively flat property, or notable low spots close to your gutters, this can cause a soggy mess! Burying the downspouts allows us to capture the gutter water and transport it to a safer location, such as the street, perimeter of the property, or a natural area. Catch basins are very efficient at capturing concentrated surface water and reducing ponding. In low spots on a property a lot of people will ask about installing a french drain, when what they really want is a catch basin. A catch basin is a box with a grate on top attached to a solid pipe. 

We place the catch basin in an area that collects a lot of water, such as a low point on a property, or along a drainage swale. When it rains, the catch basin collects the water and sends it through the pipe to a safe location where the water can exit the property. This eliminates standing water and keeps your yard drier. French Drains are meant to collect ground water. They are comprised of a trench, typically 1’-2’ deep and about the same wide, perforated pipe, and drainage gravel. What this does is creates a point of least resistance underground where trapped ground water will naturally flow towards. Once the water enters the trench, it will be captured by the perforated pipe and led away to a safe discharge point. French drains are best for areas with natural underground springs, elongated low points, or muddy areas that don’t particularly hold a lot of surface water.
